Quite possibly the thing that I was most looking forward to on the programme for the 76th Goodwood Members' Meeting was the high speed demo for 1976 - '81 Group 5 Special Production class sportscars. Described as one of the most outrageous periods in sportscar history, this was a time of massive turbos, enormous wings and stretched bodywork encompassing fat tyres. It seems amazing to think that Group 5 rules, which were written to reduce costs and restrict designers & engineers via the use of carry over production car bodywork, could result in such automotive excess.
